NEUROLOGICAL COMPLICATIONS OF MEASLES IN CHILDREN

The aim of the work – to study the clinical course of neurological complications of measles in children, treated at Inpatient Department of Lviv Regional Infectious Clinical Hospital in 2018.
Patients and methods. Monitoring was conducted for 10 children with neurological complications of measles aged from 3 to 16 years. The diagnosis of measles was based on typical clinical manifestations of the disease, data of epidemiological anamnesis, results of general laboratory and immunological investigations.
Results and discussion. In 2018, five children with measles-induced encephalitis were treated at Inpatient Department of Lviv Regional Infectious Clinical Hospital, three – with meningitis and two children with encephalomyelitis. Children aged 3–6 years prevailed. Manifestations of nervous system impairment appeared on the 6–14th day of the disease. A case of measles-induced encephalomyelitis in a vaccinated 16-year-old boy with multiple sclerosis was described.
Conclusions. Among neurological complications, encephalitis dominated, which developed in children with moderate form of measles on the 10–14th day of the disease. Visual hallucinations were a leading initial symptom in all patients. Impairment of the nervous system in the form of encephalomyelitis is a severe complication, characterized by a long-term course. Complete recovery with restoration of impaired functions is possible due to timely intensive treatment. Nowadays, permanent following of a set of listed prophylactic inoculations to prevent measles is crucial, first of all, following vaccination schedules with obligatory anti-epidemic measures in the focus of infection.
