Abstract

Abstract. A key factor in ensuring high-quality neurological care in Europe is the updating and harmonization of specialist training programs.

The new sample internship training program in the specialty “Neurology” approved by the Decree of the Ministry of Health of Ukraine on July 14, 2022 No. 1219, from the 2022/2023 academic year provides for a reduction of hours from 1,560 to 936.

For this purpose, we decided to turn to world experience and compare the programs and organization of neurologist training in the leading European countries, the USA and Canada, paying attention to the peculiarities of the process organization, the requirements for the clinical base and the tasks set before the candidate.

In August 2020, an initiative group of specialists from EU countries conducted an analysis of the training system for neurologist interns. Representatives of 32 (84 %) European countries took part in the survey and answered more than 30 questions.

Сharacterized are training programs, work plans, duration of training, narrow specialization in neurology, mandatory and voluntary rotations to other medical disciplines; mastering survey methods. Problems, difficulties faced by residents, requirements for internship bases, etc. were analyzed. However, even in the conditions of a well-planned, rich educational process, the huge part of success depends on the motivation, self-organization, and self-education of the students.

When building our own system of training neurologist interns, we must harmonize the best world experience with the traditions of the domestic neurological school. Extramural medical internship bases for neurologist interns must have a specialized neurological departments, an outpatient polyclinic department and modern diagnostic capabilities. The clinic must provide a training plan indicating the duration of mandatory rotations in basic departments, a list of practical skills and diagnostic methods that an intern can master. Use the team type of work and form a team of mentors from among the most experienced doctors. Maximize the involvement of medical interns in the diagnostic process and scientific research.
