Abstract. A comprehensive study of the problem of implementing innovative methods in the process of teaching Latin and medical terminology to medical students is considered in this paper. Ways to activate the student’s cognitive activity when studying clinical terminology is analyzed. It is noted that one of the most promising ways to activate the educational process and mental activity of students in Latin classes is knowledge of the etymology of medical terms. It is established that understanding the etymology of clinical terms contributes to their better memorization and use in practical activities. It is emphasized that one of the most productive ways of forming clinical terminological units is metaphorical nomination. It is emphasized that one of the most productive ways of forming clinical terminological units is metaphorical nomination. underlined that the Metaphorical nomination creates a vivid image that helps to quickly perceive and remember the clinical term. The research process characterizes the structure of terms-composites with a metaphorical component, which are included in Ukrainian-Latin-English medical encyclopedic dictionary in four volumes, Dorland’s two-volume illustrated medical dictionary and the educational and scientific manual “Clinical Latin with English and Ukrainian equivalents”. It is emphasized that terminological systems form the basis of a doctor’s professional language, so knowledge of etymology and meaning of the most commonly used both Latin and Greek terminological elements, which determine the meaning of the term, contribute to not only better memorization, but also professional use in practical or scientific activities both orally and in writing.
