The aim of the work: to determine the influence of acute blood loss on the antioxidant-prooxidant balance in the lungs of rats with traumatic brain injury, blunt abdominal trauma, and skeletal trauma.
Materials and Methods. In mature male Wistar line rats under conditions of thiopental sodium anesthesia, traumatic brain injury (TBI), blunt abdominal trauma (BAT), and skeletal trauma (ST) were modeled. The rats were taken out of the experiment with anesthesia after 3, 7, 14, 21, and 28 days of the post-traumatic period. Catalase activity and the content of thiobarbituric acid reagents were determined in the lung homogenate extract, and the antioxidant-prooxidant index (API) was calculated based on their ratio.
Results. It was determined that on the background of isolated trauma of various origins, a shift in the antioxidant-prooxidant ratio toward a predominance of prooxidant mechanisms was observed in the lungs. Moreover, the result was statistically significant after 14–28 days of the experiment in the context of isolated TBI, and at all stages of the post-traumatic period in the context of isolated BAT and ST. After 7, 14, 21, and 28 days of the post-traumatic period, the API value of the lungs was the lowest in the group of rats with BAT, and after the 7 and 21 days – in rats with ST.
Additional acute blood loss in the volume of 1.5 % of body weight on the background of TBI, BAT, and ST significantly aggravates the intensity of disturbances in the antioxidant-prooxidant system in the lungs. A significant decrease in the value of API of the lungs occurred after the application of BAT compared to TBI and ST, the intensity of disorders in which was practically the same.
Conclusions. More severe API value disturbances on the background of BAT compared to other experimental groups occurred during the period of late manifestations of traumatic disease – from 14 days of the experiment.
