Abstract

Since the WHO declared the COVID-19 pandemic (March 11, 2020), pneumonia and acute respiratory distress syndrome have focused on the manifestations of this new coronavirus disease. Meanwhile, COVID-19 also develops other lung lesions that require immediate surgery. In particular, the development of "spontaneous" pneumothorax as a direct consequence of lung tissue damage by SARS-CoV-2 COVID-19 virus. Here is our experience of observation in the general surgical department, which provided surgical care to patients with COVID-19 for the period of declared quarantine in a large industrial city. This report presents the case histories of four patients with "spontaneous" pneumothorax, which was a direct complication of the new coronavirus disease COVID-19. The article also traces the possible causes of this complication in pneumonia (pneumonitis) caused by SARS-CoV-2 COVID-19 virus in contrast to pneumonia caused by influenza viruses and other previously known coronaviruses.
