The aim of the work. To determine the role of the pharmacist in optimizing the therapy of cough in children with mucolytic drugs.
Materials and Methods. A questionnaire was done among pharmacy visitors (representatives of children) who visited the pharmacy to purchase a mucolytic drug for treating a child's cough.
Results and Discussion. The survey results showed that most representatives of children do not consult with a doctor before visiting the pharmacy for a mucolytic drug to treat a child's cough. Among them, 64 % purchase mucolytics based on the pharmacist's recommendation. Furthermore, 80% of respondents stated that they always receive professional pharmacist consultations on the proper use of mucolytics in children. A quarter of children's representatives do not read the instructions for use of medications, including mucolytics, which may lead to incorrect drug use, side effects, and, consequently, to reduce treatment efficacy and safety.
Conclusions. The pharmacists play a important role in ensuring the safe and effective use of mucolytics in children. They are the first to identify potential warning symptoms in a child, to advise representatives of children on rational drug use, side effects, and interactions of mucolytics with other medications and food.
