The aim of the work. Study of acute toxicity and hepatoprotective activity of extracts of Artemisia absinthium L. and Artemisia vulgaris L. herbs.
Materials and Methods. To determine acute toxicity, the method of preclinical study of drugs harmlessness was used. The study of hepatoprotective activity of Artemisia absinthium L. and Artemisia vulgaris L. herbs extracts was carried out on the model of acute tetrachloromethane hepatitis. Hepatoprotector of domestic production – Sylibor tablets were used as a comparison drug.
Results and Discussion. As a result of the study, it was found that intragastric administration of the Artemisia absinthium L. and Artemisia vulgaris L. herbs extracts at a dose of 6000 mg/kg does not lead to death of animals, changes in the integral, hematological, biochemical parameters and morphological structure of the internal organs of the experimental animals, which indicates the absence of toxic effects of extracts in a given dose and characterizes them as ptactically nontoxic (toxicity class V, LD50 > 5000 mg/kg) according to toxicity classification of substances.
In acute toxic lesions of the liver the Artemisia absinthium L. and Artemisia vulgaris L. extracts show a distinct hepatoprotective activity, inhibiting peroxidation destructive processes and reducing the development of the cytolysis syndrome; their activity is practically identical to the comparison drug – Sylibor.
Conclusion. The investigation of acute toxicity of Artemisia absinthium L. and Artemisia vulgaris L. herbs extracts demonstrates that their intragastric administration at the dose of 6000 mg/kg does not lead to the death of animals, they were neat, had satisfactory appetite, normally responded to sound and light stimuli, urinary and defecation processes were normal, breathing violations and convulsions were not observed.
The investigated extracts of Artemisia absinthium L. and Artemisia vulgaris L. herbs show hepatoprotective activity at the acute liver toxicity, that is evidenced by a decrease of the intensity of the process of lipid peroxidation and a reduction of the tetrachloromethane toxicity, leveling the biochemical parameters of animals blood and liver homogenate up to those of intact animals.
