STANDARTIZED PATIENTS IN A PROGRAM OF TRAINING FOR INTERNATIONAL STUDENTS DURING THER MASTER DEGREE PROGRAM

Abstract

The aim of the study – to improve the organization of the educational process for foreign undergraduates of the specialty “Nursing” by developing new methods of objective education and testing that would provide significant progress towards a professionally-oriented clinical evaluation at all levels and stages of clinical training and practice.

The main body. In this article we assessed the existing teaching methods that are used for foreign students in medical educational institutions of accreditation levels III–IV, in specialty “Nursing”, of the master’s level of higher education. The basic pedagogical methods of practical skills mastering by nurses that are on their master program were singled out. We also determined the expediency of using the assessment of clinical competency with the help of standardized patients.

There are many variations in the organization of clinical examinations through standardized patients, such as combining simulated and real patients (which can increase the validity of the entire exam) and even simulators,  the exam can consist of a different number  (from 7 to 40) stations (a station is a place of where test taker interacts  with a specific standardized patient), the duration of the station can vary from 4 to 25 minutes, different forms of control are used (checklists, rating scales, as well as video recording.

Conclusion. The standardized patient method is an effective and qualitative method for assessing clinical competence. It has better psychometric properties than traditional means of evaluating students at the patient’s bedside.
