The article deals with the analysis of the most common mistakes in the pronunciation of English medical terms by the students of Ivano-Frankivsk National Medical University, outlining the causes of typical violations of orthoepic and accentuation norms, as well as suggesting the ways to eliminate phonetic errors in the professional foreign language communication of medical students.
The most common violations of orthoepic norms in the professional speech of the future healthcare providers are inaccurate accentuation and incorrect articulation of vowel and consonant sounds, including errors in the pronunciation of certain digraphs. Such aberrations can arise for various reasons: interference of the Ukrainian and Latin languages, lack of self-control and self-correction skills, lack of practice of unprepared speech in real situations, presence in specialized dictionaries of different transcription systems characterized by different sound symbols based on different standards, etc.
Classification and analysis of typical mistakes of future doctors in the pronunciation of medical terms is an important part of work of both a teacher of Professional English at an institution of higher medical education and a student of higher educational establishment. On the part of the teacher, a promising direction of work to minimize the presence of errors in students’ oral speech is the development of exercise systems aimed at eliminating and preventing violations of orthoepic and accentuation norms of the English language; on the part of the student, the development of self-control and self-correction skills, working with specialized medical dictionaries, listening to audio recordings on professional topics, as well as turning to various educational resources, including specialized online courses on the study of medical terminology play an important role in the formation of the future doctors’ professional foreign language competence.
