THE USE OF WORKS OF FINE ART IN THE TEACHING OF THE DISCIPLINE “DENTISTRY OF CHILDRENʼS AGE”

The purpose of the study was to assess the impact of the use of works of fine art in the teaching of the discipline “Pediatric Dentistry” on the motivational and executive functions of cadet doctors.
The study was conducted on the basis of the Department of General Stomatology of the Odesa National Medical University in 2019–2023. 123 doctors who passed the cycles of specialization, internship and thematic improvement in the specialty “pediatric dentistry” were interviewed, including 65 people who used visual arts materials during the teaching of the section (the main group). The remaining 58 doctors, whose educational materials did not use works of fine art, made up the control group.
The academic performance of the doctors was analyzed. Motivation was assessed using the questionnaire by J. Seal et al. (2000), assessment of executive functions using the Grooved Pegboard Test (GPT). Statistical processing of the obtained data was carried out using MS Excel software (MicroSoft Inc., USA).
The doctors of the main and control groups did not differ in academic performance. In the doctors of the main group, the level of motivation increased significantly (t=5.3, p=0.001) (80.8±0.6 points) compared to the control (75.2±1.1 points). There were no differences according to the GPT results between the groups – on average, the test performance time for the dominant hand was 66.6±2.3 s in the main group and 68.7±3.8 s in the control group. For the non-dominant hand, the test performance time was 71.2±2.2 s and 72.5±2.5 s, respectively (p>0.05).
Conclusions: 1. The use of works of fine art in the teaching of the discipline “Dentistry of childrenʼs age” has a positive effect on the motivation to study.
- Executive functions of doctors are probably determined by previous life experience, education received, and do not depend on visual content.
