GYMNASIA: THE PAST FOR THE FUTURE

This article presents the authorsʼ periodization of the development of gymnasia within the education system from their inception to the present day. It is claimed that the issue of organizing the educational process in gymnasia remains relevant. Consequently, the development of gymnasia education elicits deep interest from researchers. Their works can be divided into six main groups. First, there are studies at the methodological level. Historians of pedagogy also examine this issue at the theoretical and methodological level. Second, there are authors who have studied regional features of education development, with specific chapters dedicated to gymnasia in their works. Third, there are works that focus solely on gymnasia education. Fourth, there are studies devoted to the examination of individual subjects taught in gymnasia in the past. Fifth, there are historical descriptions of individual gymnasia. Sixth, there are memoirs of students who attended gymnasia. Additionally, five stages of gymnasia development are analyzed. Attention is given to original teaching methods, the development of student creativity, and preparation for effective activities. The article demonstrates the fallacy of the decision to reduce the significance of gymnasia in modern education systems.
