One of the main task of institutions of higher medical education is to prepare highly qualified, competent, and competitive professionals. The personalization of an individual student’s curriculum is ensured by the availability of elective courses. The aim of the article is to analyze the methodological support, justify the choice of the discipline’s topics, and explore the popularity of the elective course “Microbiological principles of rational antibiotic therapy” among other elective courses taught to fourth-year students specialty “Medicine”. The content of the course “Microbiological principles of rational antibiotic therapy” describes the microbiological principles of obtaining and using antibiotics, prescribing and selection of methods for determining antibiotic sensitivity. The problems of antibiotic resistance and monitoring of resistant strains are highlighted; a patient-centered approach to prescribing antibiotic therapy is taken into account; the justification of the prevention and correction of adverse reactions arising in the process of prescribing antibiotics is taken into account and the interdisciplinary integration of knowledge regarding the use of these drugs is shown. The increase in the number of students who chose this discipline indicates, on the one hand, the awareness of the place of antibiotic therapy in the structure of industry clinical treatment protocols as a whole, and on the other hand, the importance of the acquired knowledge in the discipline for further practical application.
