PROFESSIONAL COMMUNICATION OF A DOCTOR WITH A PATIENT IN THE CARDIOLOGY DEPARTMENT: GUIDELINES FOR MASTERING THE TOPIC BY ENGLISH-SPEAKING SEEKERS OF THE MEDICAL HIGHER EDUCATION

Abstract

The article deals with the need for the foreign students of medical higher educational establishments to master the professional Ukrainian as one of the main types of speech activity in the future profession. It has been proposed the educational and methodological materials on «Professional communication of a doctor and a patient in the cardiology department» for studying by English-speaking seekers for medical degree, tested in practicals within the course «Professional medical communication of a doctor with a patient in Ukrainian» at I. Horbachevsky Ternopil National Medical University. The content and types of works are determined; it gives us possibility to distinguish the most necessary communicative needs for professional communication of a cardiologist with a patient as well as mastering lexical and grammatical material. The paper proposes types of tasks for mastering the topic by the foreigners i.e. elaboration of the minimum vocabulary, reading the text, learning new words and syntactic constructions in its context and so on. We recommend a number of post-practice tasks designed for the formation and development of language and speech competencies of non-speakers, in particular: 1. Answer the questions to the text; 2. Read the sentences, decide if they are correct or incorrect. For incorrect sentences, choose the appropriate option from the text; 3. Complete the sentence; 4. Identify the disease by keywords; etc. Next, we propose international students to construct their own conversation between a cardiologist and a patient based on a sample dialogue.

We believe that such educational materials will help foreign students to communicate fluently with the patients in the cardiology departments, ask them questions to collect anamnesis, accept and understand the answers of the patient, to express their views on the treatment or prevention of disease.
