BURNOUT SYNDROME – AN IMPORTANT PROBLEM OF NURSING TRAINING (EXPERIENCE OF SOUTH BOHEMIA REGION, THE CZECH REPUBLIC)

Abstract

The aim of the work – to evaluate the peculiarities of the occurrence and manifestations of the burnout syndrome (BS), and also necessity and possibilities of its prevention. The research was conducted with standard and non-standard questionnaires through an anonymous survey of nursing staff. It was attended by nurses from the hospitals of the South Bohemia (Bohemia).

The main body. According to the results of the general parameters by the questionnaire Maslach Burnout Inventory, we found that 46.7 % of nurses had a high degree of BS. In the area of Emotional Exhaustion 290 respondents (29 %) stated that their degree was low, 310 (31 %) middle degree, and 400 nurses, 40 %, had a high degree of Emotional Exhaustion. According to indicators of Deperso­nalization, 340 respondents (34 %) showed a low degree of Depersonalization, 310 (31 %) – medium, and 350 (35 %) – high degree of Depersonalization. According to Personal Accomplishment index, we recorded a high degree of reduction of professional achievements in 650 respondents (65 %), medium in 190 (19 %), and low in 160 (16 %) nurses. BS prevention possibilities data analysis revealed that 79 % of respondents need professional care in solving the BS problems and noted the importance of carrying out the measures for BS prevention, 13 % do not consider BS as a problem, and 8 % do not know about BS at all.

Conclusions. BS is an actual problem in the job of nurses at the hospitals of the South Bohemia (Bohemia), present in 46.7 % of the respondents. It was established that high degrees of burnout have nurses of both emergency departments and standard therapeutic departments. 79 % of respondents noted the importance of carrying out preventive measures of BS development, and also necessity in consultation of psychologists for self-help skills improvement in dealing with stress.
