Abstract

The aim of the work − to study the methodology of teaching Gastroenterology for English speaking students at the Department of Internal Medicine No. 2.

The main body. International students study at the Department of Internal Medicine No. 2. During a practical session, a teacher applies student-centred approach to each individual. Studying is performed in the manner of discussion. Educational films, multimedia presentations, etc. are used. Testing is one of the main methods of students’ academic performance rating. In addition to achieving theoretical knowledge, a student has an opportunity to analyse clinical picture of a disease by patients’ bed-side. During the series of gastroenterology, students learn how to identify the main symptoms and syndromes in cases of digestive disorders; get acquainted with study methods in Gastroenterology, and try to interpret the diagnosis results independently. At lectures, students try to put into writing lecture information. We decided that when explaining the material it is necessary to use English terminology, repeating it in Latin and in Ukrainian. The main lecture material is better to present in the form of logical figures and tables with minimal text, the teachers of the department actively attract English-speaking students into participating in national competitions in student’s research papers in Gastroenterology. This year, our students took two winning places at the International Medical Congresses of Students and Young Scientists.

Conclusions. 1. Dynamic pedagogical process supplied with the latest information technologies and regular updating of training materials, including display stands and tests, contributes to the continuous improvement of rising professionals’ competence. 2. The qualitative training of students of English language form of study in Gastroenterology requires taking measures for the generalization of acquired theoretical and clinical information; as well as to the practical skills development in students.
