Abstract

The global need for quality palliative care is constantly growing due to the increasing life expectancy and progression of chronic illnesses among the population. A qualitative approach to studying palliative medicine by nurses helps to shape competent professionals in the future and, in turn, improves the quality of life for patients and their families facing issues related to serious and potentially life-threatening illnesses, by preventing and alleviating suffering, early detection, accurate assessment, and treatment of pain, as well as physical, psychosocial, or spiritual problems.

An important component in caring for palliative patients is working in a multidisciplinary team, with a focus on the role of nurses, as they are the ones who have the closest contact with palliative patients and their families. Professional development of nurses in the field of palliative medicine is crucial, as palliative care, in addition to scientific and technical knowledge, requires a foundation of humanitarian knowledge that leads to the formation of quality professional competencies, as well as meeting the needs of an increasing number of people with potentially life-threatening serious illnesses and their families.
