Abstract

This article addresses the challenge of effectively teaching the topic of “Ionizing Radiation: Use in Medicine” within the Medical and Biological Physics discipline, given the limited time allocated for mastering this subject. To optimize the content of the educational material, we propose the use of logical structure diagrams. The developed logical structure diagrams “Nuclear Transformations” and “Use of Ionizing Radiation in Diagnostics and Therapy” help organize and systematize a large amount of information on this topic. Students should be able to clearly distinguish between possible sources of ionizing radiation and understand their main applications in therapy and diagnostics. The logical structure diagram “Nuclear Transformations” illustrates the primary types of transformations in atomic nuclei, detailing the conversion of nucleons. These reactions simplify the memorization of radioactive decay types and their equations. The graph “Distribution of the Absorbed Dose of Ionizing Radiation in Biological Tissues” is used to compare the radiation properties when interacting with matter. A visual representation of the distance at which maximum energy absorption of a specific radiation type occurs contributes to a more comprehensive understanding of the biological effects taking place in tissues and the selection of the irradiation method based on the existing pathology. The logical structure diagram “Use of Ionizing Radiation in Diagnostics and Therapy” presents the most commonly used methods of applying ionizing radiation in modern medical practice. The developed structure allows for easy navigation through the variety of diagnostic and therapeutic methods and types of ionizing radiation used in them. Utilizing logical structure diagrams enables concise, accessible, and sufficient presentation of the most relevant and essential information, which will serve as the foundation for further study of radiation medicine.
