Abstract

The article considers the peculiarities of the formation of future physicians’ terminological literacy, clarifies the importance of the etymological characteristics of clinical terms in the formation of their terminological competence. The study emphasizes that the name of a chemical element is a creative basis of a large group of multicomponent Latin clinical terms. It has been established that among the clinical terms-composites the vast majority are terms that are derived nominative units, and the main derivational process is a suffixation. It has been shown that a defining feature of terminological suffixes, productive in clinical terminology, is the presence of semantic meaning, which is specific to the medical field. The research process characterizes the structure of terms-composites with a chemical component, which are included in Ukrainian-Latin-English medical encyclopedic dictionary in four volumes, Dorland’s two-volume illustrated medical dictionary and the educational and scientific manual “Clinical Latin with English and Ukrainian equivalents”. It has been found that most clinical terms-composites with a chemical component are formed by attaching to the base of the name of the chemical element such suffixes as -ismus (meaning “chemical poisoning”) and -osis (names of occupational nosological units that indicate a chronic disease caused by a prolonged inhalation of chemical element dust). It has been emphasized that terminological systems form the basis of a doctor’s professional language, so knowledge of etymology and meaning of the most commonly used both Latin and Greek terminological elements, which determine the meaning of the term, contribute not only to better memorization, but also professional use in practical or scientific activities both orally and in writing.
