Abstract

The topic of periodontal diseases, as a section of dental special disciplines, has become one of the most neglected in the educational process. The detrimental effect of outdated concepts is the inability to write and publish scientific articles in international peer-reviewed journals, which throws back into the past Ukrainian dental science despite its achievements. The aim of the article was to analyze the main provisions of the educational process on the topic of periodontal disease in the form of comparison with the concepts of the new classification of periodontal and peri-implant diseases and conditions in 2017 to improve the theoretical foundations of Ukrainian education. In case of necrotizing periodontal diseases, as well as systemic disorders affecting the periodontium, the diagnosis is made according to other schemes than the determination of periodontal indices. Peri-implant conditions are included in the new classification because they also depend on the biofilm or local factors. Classification of periodontal and peri-implant diseases and conditions of the American Academy of Periodontology (AAP) and the European Federation of Periodontists (EFP) 2017 allows to destroy many common myths in education, which migrated to Ukrainian textbooks from the days of Soviet dentistry. The new classification expands the understanding of the etiology and pathogenesis of periodontal disease and optimizes diagnosis, treatment, monitoring, prognosis and prevention, and is therefore necessary for study.
