KOSTIANTYN TATARYNOV – EDUCATOR, SCIENTIST, PUBLIC FIGURE

The research investigates the great impact into biology science, and the main achievements along the life course of Konstiantyn Tatarynov, who was the Head of Medical Biology Department from 1973 until 1986. During this fifteen year’s period, the significant contributions were made in different areas – Zoological Museum was designated and officially opened, new learning courses were introduced into the educational process (in particular, genetics, parasitology, evolution of organ’s systems). Thanks to professors efforts the Small Academy of Sciences was put into action. Tatarynov was the author of the fundamental Biology textbook for students of medical institutes. Professor Tatarynov was such a versatile man with an incredible number of scientific interests and preferences. Among them there are: faunology, zoogeography, ecology, hunting, paleozoology, nature conservation, speleilogy. He studied as well the gene pool of transmissive carriers of the Western Ukraine, in particular, among various species of mountain birds and the other vertebrates. Based on the analysis of the Paleozoic material, he worked out the history of the formation of the carrier’s fauna of transmissible diseases. Besides the scientific activity and teaching, he was actively engaged in social and public work. He was the first head of the regional office of the Society for Nature Protection, the head of the regional section of the animal fauna, and was elected as an Honorary Member of the Ukrainian Society for the Protection of Nature. Tatarynov, for many years, was the regular TV presenter of about 85 issues of thematic almanac “Smerichka” and TV magazine “Man and Nature” at Lviv Television Studio.
Over half a century of creative work, Konstiantyn Tatarynov published more than 800 popular science articles, including manuals, reference books, textbooks, guides, encyclopedias and purely scientific articles that were read and studied by tens of thousands of future physicians, teachers and scholars of Ukraine.
The results of the archival materials research concerning the scientific-pedagogical and public activity of the Head of the Medical Biology Department of Danylo Halytskyі Lviv National Medical University K. Tatarynov are presented.
