Background. Today, modern technologies (mini-invasive, virtual autopsies) are increasingly replacing traditional autopsies. However, in complicated diagnostic cases or new diseases, the actual conduct of a full-fledged section ensures obtaining the most complete information. Therefore, the training and support of specialists who are able to conduct a qualified autopsy and clinical-anatomical analysis is of particular importance. Historical approach is useful, as it reflects the main stages of the formation of the autopsy research modern concept. The purpose of the work: to follow the main stages of the development of autopsy studies by employees of the Department of Pathological Anatomy of the Danylo Halytsky Lviv National Medical University (LNMU) during the 125 years of the institution's existence.
Materials and methods. An analysis of the autopsy reports collection of the Museum of Human Diseases of the Danylo Halytsky LNMU for the period from December 9, 1896 to December 9, 2021, which includes 95764 autopsies.
Results. The main attention was paid to the formation of a structured autopsy report, in particular, the development of a detailed unified scheme for description of macro- and microscopic changes, in-depth clinical and anatomical analysis, and the formulation of a rubricated pathological diagnosis. The paper considers the main stages of development of a unified and rubricated scheme of the autopsy report in different periods of development of the Department of Pathological Anatomy. Such work was carried out by the teachers of the department in close cooperation with the doctors of the pathology departments under the leadership of the heads: A. Obzhut (1896-1911), V. Novytskyi (1919-1941), Z. Albert (1941-1944), M.V. Voyno-Yasenetskyi (1946-1952), E.H. Palchevskyi (1952-1957, 1961-1966), D. D. Zerbino (1966-2000), Yu. O. Po-spishil (2000 - until now).
Conclusions. The historical approach helps to understand the issues and problems facing modern pathological anatomy - digitalization, standardization according to international regulations - and to take appropriate steps to solve them.
