Abstract

Introduction. The choice of a profession for young people is a factor that will later affect a person’s destiny. At the same time, motivational factors that are formed in the process of preparing for this choice play a big role. When choosing a profession, it is usually guided by financial aspects or chosen as a hobby. The best productivity is observed when these two factors coincide. Since the financial factor in choosing the profession of a nurse or paramedic is questionable, we were interested in investigating what factors influence young people’s choice of profession, what exactly motivates them in this difficult process.

The aim of the study – to analyze the motivational factors that guide future paramedics and nurses in choosing a profession.

The main part. 59 students of the 1st and the 2nd years of the I. Horbachevsky Ternopil National Medical University participated in our study, who were getting education in the specialties “Nursing” and “Paramedic”. At the same time, we used a questionnaire created by us, which was sent to the respondents in the form of a Google form. Participation in the survey was voluntary and anonymous. Based on the results of the questionnaire, it was established that the majority of respondents were choleric by temperament type, while the distribution was the same for other types of temperament. The first places in the rating of motivational factors when choosing a profession were occupied by the following answers: “I want to help people”, “the work is exciting”, “the profession deserves respect from people”, “I want to work in comfortable conditions”. That is, as we can see, future paramedics and nurses are guided by more altruistic factors when choosing a profession. At the same time, parents and friends had practically no influence on this choice. The fact that it was much easier to enter these specialties also attracts attention, so those who did not pass the competition for the medical faculty, but decided to acquire a medical specialty, still continued their path in this field. “They like to communicate with people,” answered the vast majority of respondents, which is quite important in choosing these professions. In the future, communication skills will play a significant role in the formation of professional skills. Almost half of the interviewees would like to get a job abroad in their specialty in the future, after receiving a diploma. Such motivation as “marrying a person related by profession” was quite low among the interviewees. The students gave their answer options similar to those in our questionnaire.

Conclusions. Young people are guided by more altruistic factors, such as compassion and the desire to help people, when choosing a specialty “Nursing” or “Paramedic”. Therefore, when conducting professional orientation in these specialties, it is precisely on this that it is necessary to focus the main attention. The questionnaire we developed showed a fairly high level of informativeness regarding motivational factors when choosing a future profession in the field of medicine, since most questions were answered positively, so it can be used in the future (after improvement and addition) for the purpose of quality professional orientation among young people.
