PECULIARITIES OF EMOTIONAL INTELLIGENCE IN NURSES STUDYING AT THE MASTER’S PROGRAM IN NURSING

Abstract

In nursing, emotional intelligence is defined as the constructive ability of the nurse to use self-awareness, empathy, and emotional regulation that facilitates and informs the essence of professional nursing care. Therefore, the preparation of students of higher education in the specialty «Nursing» as future professional nurses is always the main priority of educational institutions all over the world.

The aim of the study – to analyze the level of emotional intelligence (EI) of nurses who are obtaining a master’s degree in Nursing, and to determine the factors affecting it.

The main part. 70 students of the 2nd level of higher education in specialty 223 «Nursing» were included in the study. In addition to general questions, in order to determine the level of emotional intelligence, the research used the methodology of the MEI «Emotional Intelligence» by M.O. Manoilova. It was established that the general level of EI in relation to integral indices was: integral index of EI (20.28±11.65) points, intrapersonal aspect of EI (12.87±6.39) points and interpersonal aspect of EI (7.41±6.99) points. When comparing the integral indices of EI with certain indicators (academic performance, age of the applicants and work experience), a direct association was found between the level of the integral indicator of EI and academic success and work experience, as well as between the intrapersonal aspect of EI and work experience. The Kraskel-Wallis analysis of rank variations showed the presence of statistically significant differences regarding the investigated integral indices of EI, namely the integral indicator and the intra-personal aspect, among students with different academic performance.

Conclusions. Nursing students with satisfactory academic performance probably have lower integral indices of emotional intelligence – an integral indicator and an intrapersonal aspect, which are likely to differ from these indices for good (by 117.37 % and 354.81 %, respectively) and excellent (by 170.97 % and 437.82 % success rate.
