Abstract

To study the prevalence and clinical features of the course of apical periodontitis. Materials and Methods. Sixty-six patients aged 18–60 years were examined. A clinical and radiographic examination was performed, including assessment of endodontic status and the condition of periodontal tissues using the PSR and PMA indices. Results. A high frequency of inadequate root canal obturation was detected (60.6 % of canals were partially obturated), which correlated with the presence of destructive changes in the periapical tissues in 81.8 % of cases. Conclusions. Clinical and radiographic analysis demonstrated a predominance of active inflammatory processes in teeth with apical periodontitis. Most cases were associated with inadequate root canal obturation and insufficient coronal sealing after endodontic treatment, which may contribute to reinfection of the root canal system.
