This article explores the relationship between different biotypes of the oral mucosa and the effectiveness of dental implantation, a highly relevant topic in modern dentistry and implantology. Contemporary implant protocols increasingly demand a personalized approach to each clinical case, taking into account the patient’s anatomical and physiological characteristics. One of the key determinants is the mucosal biotype – the thickness, density, and structural properties of the gingival tissue – which significantly influences the postoperative healing process, implant stability, the risk of gingival recession, and the overall esthetic outcome of implant therapy. The article reviews current concepts of biotype classification (thin, medium, and thick), their morphological characteristics, diagnostic methods, and patient management strategies tailored to each biotype. Emphasis is placed on the importance of pre-implant assessment of the soft tissue biotype to reduce complications and improve clinical predictability. Special attention is given to studies that demonstrate a correlation between mucosal biotype and the incidence of complications such as peri-implantitis, marginal gingival recession, and failure of osseointegration. The article also summarizes contemporary clinical approaches to biotype modification aimed at enhancing implantation outcomes, including various soft tissue augmentation techniques. In conclusion, the article demonstrates that consideration of the mucosal biotype is a critical component of comprehensive dental implant planning and an essential factor in achieving individualized, high-quality dental care.
