Abstract

The article presents the results of a clinical study evaluating the effectiveness of various treatment protocols for inflammatory periodontal diseases in young individuals. The development and implementation of new approaches in comprehensive periodontal therapy allow for an increase in clinical treatment effectiveness, a reduction in treatment duration and cost, and, consequently, an improvement in oral health and overall quality of life. Objective. To determine the clinical effectiveness of different protocols for comprehensive treatment of inflammatory periodontal diseases in young patients. Materials and methods. The study involved 120 patients aged 18 to 35 years, randomly assigned into two equal groups. Participants in Group I received treatment according to the developed protocol, while those in Group II underwent therapy based on a conventional approach. Each patient underwent periodontal examination before treatment, on day 7, and at 1 and 3 months after treatment. During each follow-up examination, the Simplified Oral Hygiene Index (OHI-S), Papillary-Marginal-Alveolar Index (PMA), and Papillary Bleeding Index (PBI) were assessed. Clinical effectiveness was evaluated using a three-point scale: “improvement”, “normalization”, or “no change”. Results. Clinical effectiveness assessed after 3 months was higher in Group I: 51 individuals (85,0%) demonstrated “normalization” of periodontal tissue condition, while 9 (15,0%) showed “improvement”. In Group II, “normalization” was observed in only 28 participants (46,7%), “improvement” in 18 (30,0%), and “no change” in 14 patients (23,3%). Moreover, a statistically significant reduction (p<0,01) in mean index values was recorded in Group I, unlike in patients treated with the standardized protocol. Conclusions. The use of the developed protocol for the treatment of inflammatory periodontal diseases increases clinical effectiveness to 85,0% after 3 months of observation. In contrast, the standardized approach results in recovery in only 46,7% of patients within the same period, indicating the need to improve existing treatment protocols and consider the pathogenetic features of periodontal inflammation when planning therapy.
