The zinc level was measured in the blood of pregnant HIV-infected women. Zinc deficit is more often seen in children born to HIV+ mothers, then in their mothers themselves. Significant differences in averages of concentration of zinc in the principal and controlled groups indicate a lower level in AIDS-infected children, born of AIDS-infected mothers, as compared to healthy children, who are also born of AIDS-infected mothers. Rickets and protein- energy malnutrition are revealed more often in infants with low zinc concentration in blood serum born to HIV-infected women than in infants without zinc deficit.
