Abstract

Bronchopulmonary dysplasia remains important cause of morbidity of very premature infants significantly affecting their long-term outcomes. Despite the all developments and latest advances in perinatal medicine the incidence of BPD has not decreased much during the last decades. Significant changes in BPD definition, pathology, pathophysiology, clinical course, radiological findings and management have occurred over the last 40 years. After many years of intensive and extensive investigations aimed to study mechanisms of BPD development and elaborate effective methods of its prevention and treatment, there is a discouraging paucity of proven safe and beneficial therapies to prevent or limit the severity of BPD. Additional researches are needed to fully understand the pathogenesis of BPD and develop improved interventions in the prevention and management of the condition.
