The relationship between laryngotracheitis (LT) in children and indoor environmental factors such as tobacco smoke, crowding, dampness, pets, and adverse psychological climate in the family is reported. It was established that crowding and adverse psychological climate in the family occurred significantly more often among children with LT than in the control group. The percentage of those who had smoking family members and, in particular, smoking mother, among children with 1–3 episodes of LT was significantly higher than among children of the control group. There was no significant difference between children with recurrent LT (4 or more episodes of illness) and children of the control group with regard to second-hand smoke. It was determined that children with 1–3 episodes of LT more often lived in houses with moisture problems than children of the control group did (p <0.1). There was no significant difference between children with LT and children of the control group concerning pets ownership.References
