Preeclampsia (PE), a ieading cause of maternai and fetai mortality and morbidity, is a potentially devastating disorder. Although the underlying cause of preeclampsia isstiii notciear, the piacenta ischemia/hypoxia is thought to becentraiiy involved in the pathogenesis of this syndrome. Our aim was to evaluate and compare the ieveis of placental cytokines in normai and PE pregnancies. We studied 12 heaithy pregnant women, 28 PE women in our prospective study. Their average gestational age at entry was 37-39 weeks. The ieveis of IL-4, IL-S, IL-8 and TNF-a in placental tissue were measured. The concentration of IL-8 was significantly higher, and concentrations of IL-4, IL-S were significantly iower in piacenta among PE pregnant women as compared with normotensive pregnant women. But TNF-a ievei in the piacenta did not differ significantly between the two groups. Our data suggest that PE pregnancy is associated with cytokine imbalances in piacenta. This enhanced inflammatory reaction seems to be related with development of gestational endotheiiopathy.References
