SUMMARY. Partial or complete tooth loss, along with degenerative and dystrophic processes in the oral mucosa and periodontal tissues, represent one of the major challenges in modern dentistry. Although removable dentures are widely used, they often cause discomfort due to poor retention. To improve the stability of dentures, fixation agents are used to enhance adhesion between the mucous membrane and the prosthesis, ensuring its stable positioning. There is a growing need for the development of an effective, safe, and affordable domestic gel for denture fixation that combines safety, high efficacy, and cost accessibility.
The aim – to substantiate the feasibility of developing a denture fixation agent in the form of a gel and its formulation.
Material and Methods. The material used for the research was the phytoconcentrate “Baktrofor”, as well as various hydrogel bases: guar gum, chitosan, sodium alginate, carbopol, sodium carboxymethylcellulose, and sodium hyaluronate. To solve the research tasks, physicochemical, biopharmaceutical, microbiological, and pharmacotechnological methods were applied.
Results. Based on the studied properties and natural composition, the phytoconcentrate “Baktrofor”, developed by the Scientific and Production Association "Ecomed", was chosen as the active pharmaceutical ingredient (API). Carbopol 974P NF was selected as the gel-forming agent, as it demonstrated the best release of active substances from the agar gel. To determine the optimal API concentration, microbiological studies were conducted, showing inhibition of the growth and reproduction of staphylococci, streptococci, and fungi of the Candida genus. Additional studies assessed the bacteriostatic and bactericidal effects, confirming the efficacy of gels containing 7.5% and 10% “Baktrofor” phytoconcentrate.
Conclusions. The feasibility of developing a denture adhesive in the form of a gel based on the phytoconcentrate “Baktrofor” has been substantiated. Based on the results of biopharmaceutical studies, the optimal gel base – Carbopol gel – was selected. It was established that gels containing the phytoconcentrate exhibit bacteriostatic and bactericidal activity against staphylococci, streptococci, and Candida species, but have no effect on bacilli and lactobacilli. For further studies, gels containing 7.5% and 10% of the “Baktrofor” phytoconcentrate were selected.
