SUMMARY. An unfavorable environmental factor is passive smoking, which contributes to the risk of thyroid pathology among pregnant.
The aim – to evaluate the thyroid gland histology and the thyroid hormone levels in pregnant rats under the influence of a pharmaceutical composition based on L-carnitine in the passive smoking modelling.
Material and Methods. The study was conducted on 40 nonlinear pregnant rats of 6 months of age, which included the following experimental stages: animals mating, determination of the first day of pregnancy, passive smoking modeling and administration of test substances to experimental groups, autopsy of rats on day 20 of gestation, assessment of the thyroid gland histology and determination of the thyroid hormones level in the serum.
Results. The effect of passive smoking during pregnancy is manifested by negative changes in the thyroid gland histology: an increase in the follicles size, a flattened form of thyrocytes, the severity of interlobular connective tissue layers, increased blood flow to the microcirculatory vessels, a decrease in the intrafollicular epithelium volume. Also, the passive smoking during pregnancy caused an increase in serum thyroid hormone levels. The use of a studied pharmaceutical composition in pregnant rats with passive smoking modeling reduced the thyroid hormones level and the morphological signs of the thyroid gland structural disorders, which were found in untreated rats.
Conclusions. The structural and functional features of the thyroid gland in pregnant rats with passive smoking modeling were established, characterized by histological signs of a moderate decrease in the ability of the organ parenchyma to reparative processes and the formation of new follicles with a simultaneous increase in thyroid hormones. The use of a pharmaceutical composition based on L-carnitine at a dose of 25 mg/kg in the passive smoking modeling during pregnancy helped to maintain normal thyroid gland histology and prevents excessive increase in thyroid hormones.
