Abstract

SUMMARY. Arterial hypertension (AH) is the cause of 13 % of all deaths in the world. Every year the number of patients with high blood pressure will increase. Despite a large number of pharmacological and non-pharmacological treatments for hypertension, the number of patients with insufficient control of the disease remains high worldwide.

The aim – to review the list of the most recent sources of information on the provision of patient-centred medical care for the management of patients with hypertension.

Results. Treatment of hypertension is the most effective when the patient cooperates and fully participates in the treatment process, including adherence to the treatment, self-monitoring, and monitoring of blood pressure. A number of studies have found specific effects of communication on self-care and adherence. Another study identified the kind of wording patients want to hear when talking to a doctor about high blood pressure. In addition to the specifics of communication, there are now international guidelines that support treatment methods to improve patient-physician compliance. Several factors need to be considered: identifying drug-related side effects and appropriate dosage levels, using long-acting drugs that require a single dose, avoiding complex dosing regimens, using single pill combinations whenever possible, considering the patient's financial ability to pay for a particular regimen in the long term, if appropriate, or other relevant aspects of local or national health systems, and enlisting the support of a family member or other social support.

Conclusions. There is a need to improve the communication skills of doctors and to emphasise the importance of patient awareness of self-care. Only comprehensive measures can ensure a sufficient response to hypertension treatment and help patients live longer and better lives.
