Abstract

Calcific tendinitis is a fairly common disease of the shoulder joint with a characteristic accumulation of calcium hydroxyapatite in the tendons of the rotator cuff, accompanied in most cases by local inflammation and pain, which significantly affects the quality of patients life.

The aim – to determine the characteristic clinical symptoms and the effectiveness of additional research methods to improve the diagnosis and determine further tactics for the treatment of this pathology.

Material and Methods. A survey of 58 (17.90 %) patients with calcific tendonitis of the rotator cuff of the shoulder. The mean age of patients was 43.7±1.6 years, men were 23 (39.65 %), women 35 (60.35 %). Examination of patients was performed according to clinical protocols of medical care. They included: general clinical and instrumental methods of research, namely – examination of the patient, radiography, sonography at the indications of magnetic resonance imaging.

Results. The manifestation of symptoms depended on the phase of the disease. Among the leading symptoms of calcific tendinitis was pain and limitation of active and passive movements, especially during adduction in the shoulder joint. Radiological signs of calcific tendinitis were found in 87.93 % of patients. Sonographic signs of pathology were detected in almost all cases and depended on the type of ossification. MRI was performed according to the indications.

Conclusions.  In a clinical study of patients the leading symptoms were: pain of varying intensity and limitation of active and passive movements in the joint. Radiography and sonography allow to fully determine the size and location of calcium hydroxyapatite deposits in the tendons of the rotator cuff and to determine further treatment tactics.
