On the territory of our state there are 183 penitentiary institutions and remand prisons, which contain 56638 people. Being in an unfavorable psycho-emotional environment in conditions of prolonged isolation contributes to the abuse of tobacco by men. Smoking causes numerous diseases in the smoker and his environment, depletion of adaptation mechanisms, damage to the endothelium, increase the acidity of gastric juice and the like.
The aim of the study – to determine the concentration of active metabolites of nitric oxide as a marker of endothelial dysfunction in men held in the centers of State Criminal Investigation Service, with chronic gastritis during prolonged smoking.
Materials and Methods. A survey was conducted of convicted men with a smoking history of more than 5 pack-years and an index of smoking severity of more than 4 points. The group 1 (control) included men without concomitant somatic pathology and bad habits. The group 2 – smokers without pathology of the gastrointestinal tract. The group 3 consisted of smokers with chronic gastritis.
Results and Discussion. Smokers with experience had a decrease in the concentration of active metabolites of nitric oxide in the blood compared with the control group. Smokers with chronic gastritis show a further decrease in the concentration of nitric oxide, which may indicate a progression of endothelial dysfunction.
Conclusions. Long-term tobacco smoking in chronic gastritis leads to a decrease in the concentration of active metabolites of nitric oxide in the blood and contributes to the development of endothelial dysfunction.
