MENTAL HEALTH OF MILITARY PERSONNEL IN WAR CONDITIONS: CHRONIC STRESS, RISKS AND WAYS OF REHABILITATION

Purpose: The aim of this study was to determine the impact of prolonged exposure to combat on the mental health of servicemen and to outline effective approaches for psychological rehabilitation and social reintegration. Materials and Methods. The study applied bibliosemantic, medical-sociological, and medical-statistical methods, along with focused and free interviews. The sample included 106 participants: 71 experienced long-term combat exposure, 22 were undergoing recovery after intensive battles, and 13 were veterans. The research was conducted in 2024–2025 in compliance with international and national ethical standards. Results. Findings revealed insufficient psychological training: more than half of respondents did not receive stress-resilience training, which correlated with a high prevalence of psychological disorders. The most common symptoms were insomnia, anxiety, apathy, and helplessness. Only 13.3% had ever sought psychological assistance, reflecting a lack of trust in the support system. Physical health deterioration manifested through chronic fatigue, back and joint pain, and cardiovascular and endocrine disorders. Social aspects were marked by tendencies toward self-isolation alongside strong peer support. A comparison with international practices (Israel, USA, NATO) highlighted the effectiveness of systemic psychological support models integrating testing, group programs, and post-combat rehabilitation. The Ukrainian context revealed additional challenges – mass traumatic experiences and the urgent need to establish a unified national system of psychological care. Conclusion. The development of a comprehensive multisectoral model that integrates governmental, community, and international resources is essential to ensure sustainable support, rehabilitation, and social reintegration of servicemen and veterans.
