Purpose: to give the recommendations for improving the training of medical students in the field of communications.
Materials and Methods. A comparative analysis of the necessary competencies of medical specialists of the WHO European Region, Ukrainian educational standard, and curricula for the training of physicians was conducted.
Results. The development of public health in Ukraine and the COVID-19 pandemic are drawing attention to the importance of health communication. At the same time, according to the WHO, our country has a limited capacity in this area. The main graduates’ competencies necessary for proper communication are identified, including the ability to adapt scientific data to different populations, build therapeutic relationships with the patient, interact with different populations, communicate through modern media, work in multidisciplinary groups, etc. Measures to achieve these competencies within the existing training courses, such as Ukrainian and foreign languages, medical terminology, computer science, social medicine, public health, clinical disciplines, etc. are proposed. Approaches to the organization of the elective course “Communication in Health Care” have been developed.
Conclusions. Ukrainian higher medical education has significant reserves for improving the training students’ communication skills. Attention should be paid to information hygiene and security, crisis and risk communication, communication of research data and uncertainty, communication with persons with communication disorders, services, which help organize the remote work of teams, etc.
