Abstract

Introduction. Identifying prognostic factors of the quality of professional life of nurses will not only expand existing knowledge, but also substantiate the need to plan and develop strategies to ensure the professional quality of medical workers’ life, which will ultimately lead to the provision of high-quality medical care.

The aim of the study – to establish the professional quality of life of nurses in oncology departments and analyze the factors that influence it.

The main part. The study included 60 nurses who were divided into groups depending on the profile of the department in which they work, length of service, age, body mass index, as well as depending on the presence or absence of night shifts and chronic diseases. The scale (questionnaire) for assessing the quality of life for professional medical workers included 5 subscales: satisfaction with compassion, satisfaction with tangible support, level of burnout, level of secondary traumatic stress and level of moral suffering. In nurses working in oncological departments of the therapeutic profile, the level of satisfaction with compassion is significantly lower compared to the data of nurses of outpatient (by 19.58 %) and surgical (by 12.73 %) departments, and the level of satisfaction with tangible support in therapeutic nurses is significantly lower compared to the values of surgical nurses (by 14.74 %). At the same time, the burnout level and the level of moral suffering of nurses in oncology departments of the therapeutic profile are significantly higher in relation to such data in employees of outpatient departments by 27.45 % and 15.99 %, respectively. The indicators of professional quality of life of nurses in oncology departments are influenced by: work experience (probably higher values of the burnout level, secondary traumatic stress and the level of moral suffering in nurses with professional work experience of more than 10 years compared to respondents with work experience of up to 10 years); age (probably higher values of the level of secondary traumatic stress in nurses over 40 years compared to respondents under 40 years); the presence of chronic diseases (probably lower values of satisfaction with compassion and with tangible support, as well as a probably higher level of moral suffering compared to respondents without chronic diseases).

Conclusions. Nurses’ age, work experience, and history of chronic diseases affect nurses’ professional quality of life, which is important for ensuring high-quality patient care.
