Abstract

Introduction. The importance and independence of the nursing profession and the wide range of nursing competencies mean that the central issue of nurse motivation remains an important issue for many managers. Researchers claim that nurses’ work motivation is positively or negatively influenced by some factors, such as incentives, personal and organizational factors, as well as global empowerment. It was established that nurses are generally satisfied with their work, and there is no significant difference in work motivation between nurses regardless of the place of work. However, there is a need for a deeper understanding of the work motivation of registered nurses, as it is fundamental to the effectiveness of their work.

The aim of the study – to analyze the motivational factors of the work of nurses in therapeutic and surgical departments.

The main part. 45 nurses participating in the study were trained in advanced training and retraining courses for junior medical and pharmaceutical specialists. To determine the motivational factors of the work of nurses of therapeutic and surgical departments, we used the validated questionnaire “Study of motivations of medical staff” by Honcharuk and scales from official available sources. When analyzing the answers to each question of the questionnaire, it was established that the majority of nurses of the therapeutic profile put vocation, curiosity, close cooperation with people, complexity, and responsibility of work in the first place in the rating of motivators. At the same time, the majority of nurses of the surgical profile ranked the vocation, interest, and responsibility of the job in the first place in the rating of motivators. The obtained results indicate that the choice of a nursing profession is often associated with vocation and responsibility, which provide special feelings of job satisfaction. However, the opinion that nurses depend on doctors and that nursing is an “inferior” profession persists not only among a part of the general public but also in the opinions of nurses, which is reflected in the rating of nurses of therapeutic departments (81.82 % rated professional prestige jobs to the lowest rating level). Management style, professional development, and interpersonal relationships can influence motivation. Thus, it can be assumed that the level of motivation of nurses is closely related to the effectiveness of their work.

Conclusions. Nurses in surgical departments put motivations to work on higher places in the rating vs therapeutic nurses.
