THE ASSOCIATION OF THE LEVEL OF GENERAL EMOTIONAL INTELLIGENCE AND THE TYPE OF EATING BEHAVIOR IN OVERWEIGHT AND OBESITY PERSONS

The complex of pathophysiological processes that make up obesity has a multifactorial etiology and includes many genetic, external and personal factors, including emotions that reflect a person’s attitude to different areas of life and himself, and the intelligence contributes to this understanding, producing methods of activity to achieve goals and meet needs.
The aim of the study – to assess the level of general emotional intelligence in persons with overweight and obesity of I and II degrees, depending on the type of eating behavior.
The main part. The study included 102 patients who sought the advice of a nutritionist to lose weight at the clinic of plastic surgery and rejuvenation medicine ANACOSMA, Kiev. The type of eating behavior was determined using the Dutch Eating Behavior Questionnaire DEBQ (Dutch Eating behavior Questionnaire). Emotional intelligence was assessed using the MSCEIT (Mayer-Salovey-Caruso Emotional Intelligence Test). The frequency characteristics of the studied parameters were described as an absolute value (n) and a percentage (%). The highest percentage of individuals who demonstrated a high or average level of general emotional intelligence had a rational type of eating behavior both in the overweight group (50.0 % showed a high level) and in the obese group (100.0 % showed an average level). At the same time, the highest percentage of people who demonstrated a low level of general emotional intelligence was found among study participants with emotiogenic and mixed types of eating behavior (52.9 and 50.0 % with overweight and 81.3 and 60.0 % with obesity). In addition, all persons with a high level of emotional intelligence showed a rational type of eating behavior; persons with an average level of emotional intelligence almost equally demonstrated external, emotional and restrictive types of eating behavior (24.1, 27.6 and 20.7 %, respectively); persons with a low level of emotional intelligence most often demonstrated an emotional type of eating behavior (42.9 %). As for people with obesity, among those who showed an average level of general emotional intelligence, an external type of eating behavior was most often found (41.7 %), and in a person with a low level of emotional intelligence, an emotional type of eating behavior was found (54.2 % ).
Conclusions. An association of a high and medium level of general emotional intelligence with a rational type of eating behavior has been established and an association of a low level of general emotional intelligence with an emotiogenic type of eating behavior has been established both in the group of people with overweight and in the group of people with obesity, which must be taken into account when providing recommendations on decrease in body weight..
