Summary. The article presents a historical and scientific review of the literature, which chronologically presents the development of maxillofacial orthopedics, in particular, maxillofacial traumatology.
The aim of the study – to analyze the data from the literature sources regarding the chronological aspects of the development of maxillofacial traumatology, to identify the positive and negative moments.
Materials and Methods. The bibliosemantic method was used to clarify the state of the problem, to analyze the results of previous scientific research based on literature sources and electronic resources.
Results and Discussion. The literature presents data on historical milestones in the development of maxillofacial traumatology, principles of care for injuries of the maxillofacial region, development of orthopedic structures for the correct repositioning and fixation of jaw fragments in case of fractures, to correct the position of displaced and improperly fused fragments, as well as to eliminate other consequences of injuries of the maxillofacial region in a scattered and contradictory manner. The chronology of methods of mandibular immobilization is considered. The options for repositioning and fixation of mandibular fragments, tools and devices are presented, and construction materials are described.
Conclusions. The paper clarifies many historical facts, provides interesting details, and presents rare documents. In today's warfare, we are witnessing an increase in the number of soldiers with traumatic injuries of the maxillofacial area, post-traumatic defects and facial deformities, which are the result of inadequate and untimely medical care on the battlefield. So, following the historical experience of such injuries, it is necessary to have an algorithm of actions directly on the frontline, in hospitals and rehabilitation centers.
