Summary. Clinical and experimental studies suggest a close association between periodontal disease and endocrine dysfunction. The role of free radical processes as a universal stress-implementing mechanism of cell damage is of great importance in the pathogenesis of periodontal disease.
The aim of the study – to learn the effect of our proposed treatment and prevention complex, which contains drugs with antioxidant properties, on the state of the prooxidant-antioxidant system of oral fluid in children with chronic catarrhal gingivitis on the background of diabetes.
Materials and Methods. Therapeutic and prophylactic measures were performed in children with chronic catarrhal gingivitis, who were prescribed a common complex (groups 1, 2) and proposed by us (group 3), which includes drugs that have antioxidant effects. The activity of catalase, superoxide dismutase, the level of diene conjugates, malonic dialdehyde in oral fluid were determined.
Results and Discussion. The results of the application of the treatment-and-prophylactic complex testify to the positive influence of its components on the processes of lipid peroxidation of the oral fluid of the examined children. We observe the most significant decrease in the activity of malonic dialdihyd in the group of patients who were prescribed our proposed complex. After 6 months, the rate of malonic dialdihydate in patients of groups 1 and 2 returned to baseline, and in group 3 it was probably lower than before treatment and was at the level of children in group 1. Studies of diene conjugates showed that the best results in the short (after completion of treatment) follow-up were obtained in children who were prescribed a complex containing components with antioxidants. Also, these patients showed a probable difference in the indicator during the examination after 6 months relative to the I examination (рɪ-v <0.05). Decreased lipid peroxidation during treatment of chronic catarrhal gingivitis in patients with diabetes mellitus is accompanied by an increase and maintenance at a sufficiently high level for 6 months of antioxidant protection of oral fluid, as evidenced by studies of superoxide dismutase and catalase.
Conclusions. The use of our proposed treatment and prevention complex made it possible to reduce lipid peroxidation and increase the antioxidant properties of oral fluid in children with chronic catarrhal gingivitis and diabetes.
