Abstract

SUMMARY. Retropharyngeal cysts represent a rare occurrence, however, comprehensive anamnesis collection followed by meticulous endoscopic scrutiny of the entire pharynx and CT scan are sufficient for diagnosis. Coblation removal of retropharyngeal cysts stands as a highly efficacious and secure treatment method.

The aim – on the basis of data from clinical examinations of a patient with a retropharyngeal cyst, to assess the effectiveness of surgical treatment by coblatory removal.

Material and Methods. We give our own clinical observation. Man V., aged 41, with complaints of sore throat, discomfort when swallowing and a lump in the throat.

Results. After the operation, the patient completely got rid of the symptoms that had bothered him previously. On examination on the third day after surgery, the patient felt well. There was only slight discomfort in the throat. At the next examination three months later, there were no complaints.

Conclusions. Thus, a thorough collection of history followed by a detailed endoscopic examination of the entire pharynx and CT are sufficient for the diagnosis of retropharyngeal cysts. The use of endoscopic transoral access using an endoscope and coblator during surgery guarantees clear visual control, no bleeding and high recovery results.
