Purpose: to evaluate a notion “medical error” retrospectively.
Materials and Methods. A retrospective review of some historical facts was performed.
Results and Discussion. A problem of medical error in different historical periods was associated with different responsibility of medical practitioners.
In ancient Rome, the germs of state regulation of medical activity have already been observed. Regarding the era of early Christianity, unsuccessful treatment in those days was subject to severe punishment.
Conclusions. The problem of professional medical mistakes has accompanied medicine since its inception.References
