Abstract

Purpose: to analyze the attitude of men with sexual dysfunctions to the receiving and results of medical care in privately owned health care facilities.

Materials and Methods. 402 men who sought medical care due to sexual dysfunctions in privately owned health care facilities of the Ivano-Frankivsk region and agreed to participate in the study were surveyed.

Results. The absolute majority of the surveyed persons with sexual dysfunctions (87.6 %) were diagnosed when they self-referred to a privately owned health care facility, and only one in ten – at a publicly-funded ones. Interviewed men with sexual dysfunctions were more inclined to follow the received recommendations of a sexologist regarding treatment (92.0 %) than regarding lifestyle correction (42.9 %), despite the high prevalence of behavioral risk factors among them (31.3 % smoked, 14.9 % abused alcohol, 40.3 % did not practice physical exercises). An important source of medical information for respondents, along with the advice of medical professionals (82.1 %), was information obtained from the Internet (71.9 %). It was found that satisfaction with the results of treatment decreased with the development of the severity of erectile dysfunction (from 56.9 % in mild to 8.1 % in severe stage ED), and was low in other forms of sexual dysfunction: 18.0 % in premature ejaculation (PE), 13.1 % – with hypoactive sexual desire disorder (HSDD) and only 10.0 % – with orgasmic dysfunction (OD). This was accompanied by low levels of full trust in doctors and satisfaction with medical care, which also decreased with the deepening of ED (from 58.5–61.5 % to 16.2–13.5 %, respectively), and among other forms of sexual dysfunctions, the lowest were at OD (15.0 % versus 25.8–22.5 % with PE and 23.0 % – with HSDD). The most important reason for dissatisfaction with medical care for sexual dysfunctions, with the exception of severe ED, was insufficient communication by medical professionals about the diagnostic and treatment methods (74.5 %), and their high cost was a concern mainly for patients with severe ED (61.4 % against the background of 21.5 % of all respondents).

Conclusion. The organization of prevention and medical care for men with sexual disorders in Ukraine requires improvement.
