Purpose: to study the impact of lifestyle in patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus on quality of life.
Materials and Methods. A survey was carried out among patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus of the Lisiecka Hospital to study the impact of lifestyle on quality of life using a short version of the World Health Organizationʼs Quality of Life Questionnaire (WHOQOL-BREF).
Results. A total of 80 patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus with a mean age of 49.18±1.69 years and a female proportion of 77.5 % were included. Overall, 15 % of participants rated their QoL as poor, and 30 % were dissatisfied with their health (as assessed by questions 1 and 2 of the WHOQOL-BREF questionnaire). Statistically significant differences in the quality of life of patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus were found depending on age, comorbidities, complications, and lifestyle.
Predictive factors for each of the four areas of QoL according to the WHOQOL-BREF questionnaire scale were identified.
Conclusions. The study found the overall quality of life among patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus is below average. Ensuring access to high-quality medical and effective psychological care, individualized disease management strategies, which may include changes in diet, physical activity and lifestyle, are the main ways to improve the quality of life of patients with type 2 diabetes. Implementation of a set of measures to provide targeted support for patients with diabetes mellitus is critical to improving their health and quality of life. Accessible and effective medical care and psychological support are crucial components of this approach.
