Abstract

Purpose: to conduct an analysis of the literature on changes in the state of mental health of people with post-traumatic stress disorders.

Materials and Methods. An analysis of literature sources from the PubMed database, which relate to the symptoms of post-traumatic stress disorders, was carried out.

Results. Post-traumatic stress disorder symptoms can be divided into 4 categories: intrusions, avoidance, negative changes in thinking and mood, changes in excitability and reactivity.

PTSD is a comorbid psychiatric disorder, so it is important to understand whether a person is re-experiencing symptoms related to the traumatic event.

Post-traumatic stress disorder is characterized by dysfunctions in the structure of the brain and neural circuits. PTSD patients compared to healthy controls were found to have significantly reduced gray matter volume in certain brain regions, including the left anterior cingulate gyrus, left insula, right parahippocampal gyrus, medial prefrontal cortex (mPFC), left hippocampus, left middle temporal gyrus and right superior frontal gyrus. Additionally, PTSD patients with different types of trauma may have different correlates of cerebral deficits. Changes in gray matter volume and morphology may underlie fear memory dysfunction and extinction in PTSD and may account for long-term cognitive impairment in individuals with PTSD.

Conclusion. Post-traumatic stress disorder in modern conditions of martial law is an important problem of health care of the population of Ukraine.
