Abstract

Purpose: to describe the medico-social portrait of smokers of electronic cigarettes with nicotine among the young population of the Lviv region.

Materials and Methods. We have conducted a survey, in which 817 young respondents (from 18 to 45 years of age) who live in the Lviv region took part. From among them, we singled out a focus group of 96 respondents who indicated that they use electronic cigarettes with nicotine (ECN) for smoking.

Results. The average age of an ECN smoker when he/she first tried tobacco products amounted to 16.00 (15.75; 18.00) years of age and did not differ from the average age of smokers of other tobacco products, in particular, regular cigarettes and tobacco products for electronic heating. Almost half of the respondents ((47.92±5.10) %) indicated that they smoke ECN regularly. The largest percentage ((37.50±4.94) %) of the surveyed ECN users are smokers who are studying. It was found that (66.67±4.81) % of the respondents hide the consumption of ECN from their family members. Half of ECN users report that their parents smoke, and about a half of the surveyed smokers in this focus group have more than 10 acquaintances and relatives who use the latest devices for tobacco consumption.

Among the most popular reasons why consumers use the latest devices for tobacco consumption, the largest percentage of the surveyed ECN smokers point to the emotional component (bad mood, feelings of anxiety, depression, etc.) as a factor that prompts them to use ECN. Also, in the conditions of the war in Ukraine, (50.00±5.10) % of the surveyed ECN smokers indicate that with the russian full-scale invasion, the frequency of their use of tobacco products has increased.

Despite the rather sad trends in the world and in Ukraine, the majority of ECN users claim that they do not have any chronic diseases. This may indicate delaying the visit to the doctor and the usual ignoring of the problem until its extreme aggravation. It may also be related to the fact that young people smoke, who do not yet have chronic diseases and will acquire them over the years of using tobacco products.

Conclusion. The information obtained will be used in the development of a personalized model of prevention of the latest methods of tobacco consumption among young people in the Lviv region.
