Purpose: to analyze the features and problems of decentralized drinking water supply in the Western region of Ukraine.
Materials and Methods: bibliometric, hygienic monitoring, compilative, analytical. The analysis of the state and quality of drinking water of decentralized sources of water supply in the regions of the Western region of Ukraine was carried out based on the materials of research conducted in 2010–2020 within the framework of state monitoring of the quality of natural and drinking water.
Results. It was established that only 6.6 % of rural residents of the Western region of Ukraine have centralized water supply. The rest of the villages are provided with drinking water at the expense of underground water through the installation of mine and tube wells. The largest number of such rural settlements is in Ivano-Frankivsk region – 98.8 % of the total number, in Ternopil region – 95.5 %. They are somewhat less in Chernivtsi oblast – 96.5 % and in Lviv oblast – 88.5 %.
In 2010, the highest percentage of water samples from decentralized sources that did not meet the standards for sanitary and chemical indicators was observed in the Ternopil region. It significantly exceeded all other regions of the Western region. Ivano-Frankivsk was in second place. Then - Lviv. And the cleanest water was noted in the Chernivtsi region.
In 2020, in all four regions that were studied, the percentage of water samples that did not meet the standards for sanitary and chemical indicators was in the range of 16.9–20.9 %, or almost every fifth sample did not meet the standards.
Conclusions. In the rural settlements of the Western region of Ukraine, water supply to the population is mainly carried out at the expense of individual sources through the installation of shaft and tube wells, the water from which is almost never tested, which leads to the populationʼs use of drinking water of uncontrolled quality. The most common and dangerous chemical pollutant of groundwater in the Western region of Ukraine is nitrates, caused by anthropogenic pollution of these sources.
