Purpose: to identify the level of stress in nurses, namely its main signs of anxiety and depression, and to assess the extent to which stress affects both the work of nurses and their daily activities. To investigate whether patients notice that stress affecting nurses worsens their practical skills.
Materials and Methods. The study was conducted among nurses and patients at the multidisciplinary hospital of the Zhytomyr Regional Clinical Hospital named after O.F. Herbachevsky. The following methods were used to conduct the study: bibliosemantic, systematic analysis and logical generalization, medical and sociological (questionnaire), and mathematical statistics. For the survey, two questionnaires were created, one for nurses and brothers based on the Hospital Anxiety and Depression Scale (HADS), the second questionnaire was created for the patient survey based on the Likert scale.
Results. To conduct a medical and sociological study among nurses and patients, a multidisciplinary hospital was chosen – the Zhytomyr Regional Clinical Hospital named after O.F. Herbachevsky. The study involved 145 nurses and nursing assistants. Characteristics of the respondents: by age – from 20 to 57 years – all age categories are evenly represented; by work experience – up to 2 years – 5 respondents, 2–5 years – 12, 5–10 years – 25, more than 10 years – 103; by gender – female – 130, male – 15; the survey represented the staff of the main profiles and in proportion to the staffing table: therapeutic – 45, surgical – 65, anesthesiology and intensive care – 35 nurses. Our study found that 15 % of nurses had subclinical anxiety, and 7.1 % had clinically expressed anxiety. Subclinically expressed depression is present in 17.9 % of nurses, and 12.9 % have signs of clinically expressed depression. All these manifestations affect the performance of their professional duties and 40 % of the surveyed patients notice it.
Conclusions. Thus, we can state that the problem of stress in nurses is important and relevant and requires further research.
